The Songs

I started this blog off by sharing two new, original songs every week. After a little over a year, it was getting a bit much to do two a week, so I narrowed it down to once a week. This was the beginning of me experimenting with songwriting. The song lyrics here are from my earlier days when I was just starting out. Since then, I’ve added many many more songs, but it was getting to be a hassle to try and type all of the lyrics here. If you’d like to hear some of my latest/newer songs, please visit me at http://www.soundcloud.com/monicadockery or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/MonicaDockeryMusic. Thank you!

The lyrics for each song are below:

1. The Politician

How can you stand there and say the things you say,
Knowing nothing you say is true
Paper thin, I see right through you
But, there’s nothing I can do

Because you’re long gone, outta’ touch
I wish you cared just how much Damage you’ve done,
With your forked tongue
But, you’re long gone, outta’ touch and
You don’t care just how much
Damage you do
So baby, I’m through with you

Deaf, dumb, and dangerous
You need your life a mess
‘Cause inside you are one too
Full of holes, the truth falls right through you
But there’s nothing I can do

(Chorus)

And you think that your lies will not fly back in your face
But, they’ll find you one day and soon,
All will see your disgrace
But they won’t see me…

‘Cause I’ll be long gone, outta’ touch
You’ll wish I cared just how much
Damage they’ve done, but I’m not the one
I’ll be long gone, outta’ touch and I won’t care just how much
Damage they do
Cause baby I’m through with you
You, you
Baby, I’m through with you, you
Baby, I’m through with you

2. Martyrs of Peace

You came and sang a simple song
Of peace and harmony
But there is no place for peace
In crowded rooms of greed
And closets full of hidden deeds

So, they shot you down and you fell hard
Like the brightest of all the stars
Do, they always do

And another star falls from the sky
And another star falls from the sky
And it ushers in the darkest of nights
And another star falls from the sky

You came to make a right from wrong
And you became a King
Of painting pictures with words of peace, so eloquently
But they defaced them, ruthlessly

When they shot you down and you fell hard
Like the brightest of all the stars
Do, they always do

And another star falls from the sky
And another star falls from the sky
And it ushers in the darkest of nights
And another star falls from the sky

(excerpt from Dr. King’s speech)

The martyrs of peace never fall in line,
So, “they” have no choice but to turn out the light (2 x’s)

Leaving the darkest of nights (4 x’s)

Alllllllll, Falllllll

And another star falls from the sky
And another star falls from the sky
And it leaves us in the darkest of nights
And another star falls from the sky

3. Alibi

I don’t blame you for the deed you’ve done,

You did what you had to for our son

If you had not killed that man, he would have first killed you

And I can’t stand by hoping for justice to favor you

So don’t you worry, they won’t know a thing

Stay here with me and I’ll fix everything

Let me be your alibi tonight//

Lay with me and hold my body tight

Let me be your alibi tonight

They’ll ask me where you’ve been and I’ll say “home”

They’ll ask me if you’d left and I’ll say “no”

They’ll ask if they can have another look around

I’ll let them ’cause you’ll be in my bed safe and sound

They won’t find it, in our hiding place

And when they leave, they still won’t have a case

Let me be your alibi tonight//

Lay with me and hold my body tight

Let me be your alibi tonight

Hush (hush), Hush (hush)

Don’t you worry (Don’t you worry)

Stay (stay) Stay (stay)

Stay with me (stay with me) //

Let me be your alibi tonight//

Lay with me and hold my body tight

Let me be your alibi tonight

4. The Haunting

I woke up this morning and what did I see

Lookin’ up my window, just staring at me

Those trees were swaying

In the breeze, they were saying,

“Dust to dust and ashes to ashes//

We all fall down//”

Down, down, down, we all fall down

I walked down my doorstep and down to street

I looked up and saw them, still staring at me

Those trees were swaying

In the breeze, they were saying

“Dust to dust and ashes to ashes//

We all fall down//”

Down, down, down, we all fall down
I tried to evade them, I tried to escape them

But, as fast as I run, there’s no runnin’ away

I still here them say, ooh, ooh
“Wake up everybody, wake up and hear

Wake up everybody, you don’t have too long here

So make it a good one, good to the last drop

Make it a good one, keep runnin’ till you stop

oooh
Ashes, to ashes, we all fall down//

Down, down, we all fall down

Down, down, we all, all, all, fall down

5. Fading Flower

fading flower, don’t fade away

please don’t listen to a word they say

cause no one knows you like you do

and no one dreams the things you do, ooh

fading flower, don’t let your petals fall

can’t you see they are the fairest of all

you are beauty and you are true

don’t let them steal that truth from you, ooh

inside your mind, who you will be

is greater than they may see

but don’t pay mind to the outside

cause what makes you beautiful

is the way your heart beats…

beauty fades and the flowers fall,

but a pure heart will win them all//

6. The Perfectionist

well, I know I don’t fold all the clothes the way you like

all my notes are off key, just can’t seem to sing them right

you’re so perfectly perfect that it makes me cry

when I’m not even close to being who you’d like

what do you want from me

what do you want from me

I’m trying so hard to please

what do you want from//

though I’ve tried all my life to make you satisfied

all my faults keep on showing I just cannot hide

from this perfectly un-perfect mess that I am

and I’m sorry I can’t reach that bar in your hand

what do you want from me

what do you want from me

I’m trying so hard to please

what do you want from me//

and I know it’s not right to live my life

trying to be all things and do everything right

but I just can’t see how I can say goodbye

to this Perfectionist I have living inside, oooh, ooh

what do you want from me, yeah

what do you want from me////

I’m trying so hard to please ….me

it’s hard to please me

oooh, oooh

so hard to please me

it’s hard to please me

7. Foreign Labels

excuse me sir, but can’t you see the sign across my head

without my sign, where would I be? lost or maybe dead

it keeps me far away from danger, things that I don’t know

and so if you could please, dear stranger, would you kindly go

I’ve got my life trapped inside this one word

I do not care if you think I’m absurd

I’m safe when defined and so neatly organized

a conversation with you could only jeopardize

whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa

where would we be if we had no way to divide

the good, the evil, weak, the strong, the ins and the outsides

a scary thought indeed for me to live without a name

if I’m caught with a foreign label, my my what a shame

I’ve got my life trapped inside this one word

I do not care if you think I’m absurd

I’m safe when defined and so neatly organized

a conversation with you could only jeopardize

whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa

I wish we all could take down our signs

and see life through someone else’s eyes

no enemies and no allies

maybe then we’d all have paradise

whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa….

8. Raindrops

the world can be so cold, when someone steals your sun

the wind and clouds so bold, to steal away your fun

when you can’t fight the storm, make peace with the rain

and ask it to rain down, a new song again

raindrops, raindrops

sing a song for me

raindrops, raindrops

bring me a new dream

it’s lonely when you try to be a butterfly

cause no one likes you to, fly higher than they do

and so they pray for storms to try and stop your flight

but rain can be your friend, no you don’t have to fight

the storm will hurt you, but hurt can do you good

if you’d embrace it for all that it could bring after it’s gone

oooooooh

raindrops, raindrops, sing a song for me

raindrops, raindrops, bring me a new dream

raindrops, raindrops, sing a song for me

raindrops, raindrops, bring me my new dream

9. Damn the Economy (Angry)

I know you do it for me

and in this economy

can’t really afford to be

angry

it’s three o’clock on a Sunday morn

wish you were here to keep me warm

the days go by, turn into weeks

how long before my lonely peaks

I know you’ve got to pay the bills

each time I whine, my head gets ill

’cause I know its what you’ve got to do

but damn it all, I still need you
I know you do it for me,

and in this economy

can’t really afford to be

angry

you’re working hard, you always do

I know you want me as I want you

but the clock keeps ticking, keeping time

it’s tickin’ takes me off your mind

’cause you know times runnin’ out

and money we can’t do without

I know it’s what you’ve got to do

but damn it all I still need you

I know you do it for me

and in this economy

can’t really afford to be

angry

our lives last only for so long

can’t help like feeling it’s all wrong

each day we lose we’ll not get back

sad when it’s just money we lack

we’ve got the love we’ve got the faith

if things don’t change, may be too late

the odds are stacked up high against us

but in the end there’s still consensus…

that you and I will always be,

no matter the economy

let money come, let money go

there’s always one thing that I know

it’s you and me until the end

come rain or shine that will not end

it’s you and me, it has to be

so damn this damn economy….

yeah

so damn this damn economy

yeah, yeah

oooooh, ooooooh

I know you do it for me

and in this economy

can’t really afford to be

angry

10. Deepness of My Love

I love you like a summer breeze

I love you like the ocean deep

I love you like the air I breath

I love you more than anything

0h baby, I, I, I

will spend the rest of my life

just tryin’ to let, let you know

how I love you so//

I love you like the finest rose

even when you make fun of my toes 🙂

I love you in the highs and lows

I love you more than you could know

oh baby, I, I, I

will spend the rest of my life

just tryin’ to let, let you know

how I love you so//

more than you’ll ever know

(more than you know)

but I still try to show

(I still try to show)

more than any cliche

(any cliche)

could ever say

in the silent stillness

(silent stillness)

that’s the place you’ll feel this

(place you’ll feel this)

deepness of my love

(of)

deepness of my love

(love)

oh baby, I, I, I

will spend the rest of my life

tryin’ to let, let you know

how I love you so

oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

(me and you together, me and you forever)
(me and you together, me and you forever)

11. The Breath

I breathe into you
you breathe into me
the breath of love
it flows freely

I breath into you
you breath into me
together we make a family
and it goes on and on
and it goes on and on

I hurt you
then you hurt me
we’re fighting the wars
of our families

they’ve been handed down
but some still can’t see
that we’re all just livin’
someone else’s legacy
and it goes on and on
and it goes on and on

so careful what you say
careful what you do
’cause it will touch the ones
who will come after you

careful what you choose to
breath life into
cause it keeps on livin’
long after you do

and it goes on and on
and it goes on and on
and it goes on and on
and it goes on and on

12. Break it Down

see, I don’t think you understand

how serious it is

how I can’t stop from thinkin’ bout

the last time that we kissed

incredibly amazing

your lips so full and tasty

I need more of you baby

so I was thinkin’ maybe

ooh lemme lemme break it down for you

ooh lemme lemme break it down for you

boy I can, I can break it down for you

ooh lemme lemme break it down for you

your touch so nice I can’t deny

you’ve got me wanting more

your legs, your arms wrapped around mine

so much there to explore

deliciously enticing

simply mesmerizing

you’ve got this boat capsizing

I think you’re realizin’

ooh lemme lemme break it down for you

ooh lemme lemme break it down for you

boy I can, I can break it down for you

ooh lemme lemme break it down for you

boy I can, I can break it down for you

ooh lemme lemme break it down for you

’cause you and me make quite a team

one of the best that I have seen

yes, you and me — so easy

so come on now, quit teasin’

ooh lemme lemme break it down for you

ooh lemme lemme break it down for you

boy I can, I can break it down for you

ooh lemme lemme break it down for you

boy I can, I can break it down for you

ooh lemme lemme break it down for you

break it down for you (break it down for you)

break it down for you (break it down for you)

break it down for you (break it down for you)

down, d – down, d-down down

down, d-down, d-down down…..

13. South Alabama

when you come to south Alabama

make sure you know what you’re gettin’ into

if you ain’t lookin’ for a good man

watch out, ’cause he might be lookin’ for you

he will tempt you with his eyes

make you feel so mighty nice

he will have you hypnotized

flying high in the Southern skies

Found a boy in south Alabama

didn’t know what I was gettin’ into

didn’t know those fields of cotton

would lead my wounded heart to you

hit me like the humid heat

came and swept me off my feet

made me love biscuits and tea

but that tea ain’t sweet as he

ba doo ba da doo ba da//

life is slow in south Alabama

but slow is exactly what you may need

time enough to smell the roses

okra, corn, and the collard greens

slow enough to fall in love

the South will fit just like a glove

when you see how good it grows

it’s men, as they say,

one reaps what he sows

14. Roller Coaster

I strapped myself in on this ride
and now there is no place to hide
I see the drop around the bend
I’m forcing my life to descend
I feel the force against my face
and my mistakes will not erase
although I’ve tried to make things right
there is no use or end in sight

roller coaster round and round
my world is hanging upside down
roller coaster round and round wish I could make it come back down

you told me once, you told me twice
but I did not take your advice
now I don’t know how long I’ll be
trapped on this ride of misery
wish I could go back in time
and undo my foolish crime
but it’s too late to change my mind
once on this ride, there’s no rewind

roller coaster round and round
my world is hanging upside down
roller coaster round and round
don’t want my world turned upside down
roller coaster round and round
I’ll find a way to come back down

round and round
I’ll find my way down
round and round
I’ll find my way down
(come back down, come back down, come back down)

15. Over

the crack, then the line, then the gap grows and grows
it’s broken again and nobody knows
just how to fix it, no no one at all
can tell me if it’s gonna stick or fall

don’t want it to be over
dont want it to be over
tell me it isn’t over
tell me it isn’t over // over

a match, then a spark
then my heart glows and glows
It’s taken by force, it’s a force
I don’t know
it builds a fire that burns inside
and even if I could, I won’t let it hide

don’t want it to be over
dont want it to be over
tell me it isn’t over
tell me it isn’t over

over and under and in between
we dance around saying the things that we mean
I need you, I love you, you are my life
and when we’re apart, it cuts like a knife

don’t want it to be over
dont want it to be over
tell me it isn’t over
tell me it isn’t over // over

Ooh, ooh, ooh

16. Life is But a Dream

I remember when I was a little girl
asleep in my bed
with the night came shifting shadows
scary visions in my head
and to me it always seemed the night would never end
but morning always ushered in the light of a bright friend

how I wish you would have waited for one more sunrise
maybe you’d of seen life’s better than it seems
how I wish you would have waited for one more sunrise, I’m sure you would’ve seen, life really is a dream

well, those same shifting shadow came to visit you
they messed with your head
they whispered things one should never hear
crying alone in one’s bed
and to you it must’ve seemed the night would never end
how I wish you would have waited until morning came my friend

how I wish you would have waited for one more sunrise
maybe you’d of seen life’s better than it seems
how I wish you would have waited for one more sunrise, I’m sure you would’ve seen, life really is a dream

and dreams can sometimes seem like nightmares
but all you gotta do is hold on ’till it’s through and when the sun returns
your left with lessons learned

so please keep on waiting for one more sunrise
I know that you will see life’s better than it seems
won’t you please keep waiting for one more sunrise, I know that you will see life really is a dream

17. Dear Faythe

I used to know you when we ran through fields of green
but Summer came rushing in and
you ran ahead of me

you were the one that I would run to
when the clouds turned dark and gray
you were the one that I would cling to
when I couldn’t find my way
but, where have you gone,
I can’t find you anywhere
where have you gone
maybe you were never there

I used to know you when, but it’s been so very long
so much has happened my friend
so far away you’ve gone

you were the one that I would run to
when the clouds turned dark and gray
you were the one that I would cling to
when I couldn’t find my way
but, where have you gone,
I can’t find you anywhere
where have you gone
maybe you were never there

dear long lost, friend of mine
I miss you it seems
but the light of you lingers
if only in my dreams

18. Back to the Grind

When the night comes and you’re fast asleep
Can you hear them calling you to see past your dreams
To the place where time and space stretch and bend
Where cares about green and gold find their end
It’s there where you see the vision you lack
But then you awake and you find you are back

Back to the grind, to the dust, to the sweat
And the sweat makes that place so damn easy to forget

Forget, get, forget, get, forget, get, get

When you go walking around through the streets
Faintly you’ll hear them speak between heartbeats
They try to remind you of the place past your dreams
They say you can bring that place here, you see
If you remain silent inside of your mind
But you can’t see past all the noise, so you find…

You find the grind, and the dust, and the sweat
And the sweat makes that place so damn easy to forget

Forget, get, forget, get, forget, get, get
Don’t forget, get, don’t forget, get, don’t forget, get, get

19. Listen

Crash, bum, bang, drum
Fe, fi, fo, fum
I smell the red coming down from the skies
Red from the small, and red from them all, and the red rain it falls
And it stings my eyes

And it’s on our heads
And it’s in our beds
Covering the ground
Can you hear the sound

Listen, listen, listen, listen to the sound of the storm//

Who said red rain
Wouldn’t leave stains
Who said that their pain wouldn’t seep in our soil
Lie to us then, now
Lie once again how
The lies can not plow through a rain thick as oil

And it’s on our heads
And it’s in our beds
Covering the ground
Can you hear the sound

Listen, listen, listen, listen to the sound of the storm//

20. Circle Square

a bit strange and rough around the edges

I’ve never fit in quite right

socially awkward, they say

it doesn’t matter anyway

’cause when I’m with you, we fly

wnen i’m with you, we fly

when I’m with you, we fly

circles don’t fit into squares

i don’t fit in anywhere

that’s ok ’cause I’m with you

who needs 10 when there are 2

a non-conformist, always controversial

you always grow against the flow

an anti-social, they say

it doesn’t matter anyway

cause when I’m with you, we fly

when I’m with you, we fly

when I’m with you, we fly

circles don’t fit into squares

you don’t fit in anywhere

that’s ok, ’cause I love you

who needs 10 when there are 2

circles don’t fit into squares

we don’t fit in anywhere

that’s ok, ’cause we are two

all we need is me and you

who needs 10 when there are 2

all we need is me and you

who needs 10 when there are 2

all we need is me and you

all we need is me and you

circles don’t fit into squares (hey, hey yeah, hey, he yeah)….fading

21. Up To You

There I am in pigtails
Watching you so close
Hanging up the clothes
On the line out back
I remember sunshine and the smell of rain
Not one single stain
on the front or the back

And it looks like I’m looking up to you
It looks like I’m looking up to you
Up to you

There I am sitting
In the front row pew
And I’m hearing you
Sing your song for the crowd
And I sit there smiling
Glad to hear you sing
Imagining it’s me
And I just seem so proud

And it looks like I’m looking up to you
It looks like I’m looking up to you
Up to you

But the years have made my eyes turned down
And I no longer can see the crown
That I used to see
And it makes me
So sad
To not look up to you
I can’t look up to you
Wish I could look up to you
And maybe when I’m older and
It’s too late, I’ll see
That it was mostly me
It was mostly me

And maybe I’ll forgive you
For all your faults instead
Of placing on your head
The blame for all of mine
Maybe I’ll remember
How you held my hand
And that just like sand
Slips through our fingers
So does time

And I hope I’ll be looking up to you
I hope I’ll be looking up to you
Up to you

22. Heal Me

There is a place where I go when I need to feel warm
It’s in your arms, in your arms
There is a face that I look for every time I wake
It is your face, your beautiful face

With one hand through my hair, and the other resting there
With your lip on my brow
Heal me now

Heal me, heal me, heal me now
Heal me, heal me, heal me now

There is a sound that I hear when we lay in the dark
It is your heart, the beat of your heart
And I can hear your breath whisper a melody
Over me, playing over me

With one hand through my hair, and the other resting there
With your lip on my brow
Heal me now

Heal me, heal me, heal me now
Heal me, heal me, heal me now (oh, oh, oh, oh, you are healing me now)
Heal me heal me, heal me now(oh, oh, oh, oh, you are healing me now)
Heal me heal me heal me now(oh, oh, oh, oh, you are healing me now)
Heal me, heal me, heal me now (oh, oh, oh, oh, you are healing me now)
There is a face that I look for every time I wake
It is your face ooooh
There is a place where I go when I need to feel warm
Its in your arms mmmmmmmm

23. Pigeon

Little pigeon
underneath the overpass
Did you hurt your wings
How’d you end up here
You belong up in that blue
Flying through the clouds
Did you forget how
To be you

To be you, ooh
You, ooh
You, ooh
You//

Or was it that somebody came
And told you not to fly
Is that the reason why
You sit here so
Dust collecting on your wings
You deserve better
Than what you’ve got right here
Don’t give in to the fear
Of being you

Being you, ooh
You, ooh
You, ooh
You//
Of being you, hey
Being you, hey

Birds don’t belong on the ground
What you have lost can be found
It’s not too late for you to fly
You can still reach to the sky
Just be you

Just be, just be, just be you////

(Raise your wings up to the sky///)

Be you, ooh, you, ooh (fade)
